Social Security Card and Passport Show Different Names

My question involves name change laws in the State of: CA

Hello,

I was born as (example) John Smith.

My mother's last name is Johnson.

I applied for a social security card 30 years ago.

For Social Security, my name became John Smith Johnson.

Johnson as my Last Name, Smith as my middle name.

**Now I have a problem:

My passport name was also changed but it shows:

SMITH JOHNSON as my last name. Bunched up. No middle name on passport

Social Security Number/Card shows:

SMITH as Middle name. JOHNSON as last name.


I want to get everything the same. Should I change my social security card or passport name? How do I do it? Cost does not matter at this point. What is easiet, in your opinion?

Another major piece of this is what does your birth certificate show? and your drivers license? It is best to get them all in sync. My opinion is that it is less difficult to get a new passport with a corrected name than to change your social security card. But, since cost does not matter to you, you should figure out which name you really want to use and get everything else changed to match. Once you decide which name you wish to use, you may be able to handle it by completing forms for each organization and working it through. Depending on the details of your situation, it is possible that you'll need to take name change action in court.

Thank you for responding. I use John Smith Johnson, or John S. Johnson or John Johnson.

All my tax records, marriage docs, etc are under John Johnson. Smith only as middle name or the letter S. as middle initial.

DAILY USE
Smith as middle name
Johnson as last name
John as first name.

WHEN TRAVELING

SMITH JOHNSON as my whole last name is when I travel.

Thank you, Scott67 I want to use John Smith Johnson. Johnson as my last name. Not Smith Johnson as my last name. I have to embroil myself with two major government entities. Which is easier to deal with? Passport (state department) or Social Security? Since my daily life is Social Security, then it seems that changing my passport name is the way to go. As for a court order, what kind of attorney do I need?

If your names on all of your ID and documents are consistent except for your passport, it makes sense to correct your passport.
