I'm in California, lawyer dudes.

My wife and I have agreed to file for divorce early next year, when her perm. green card is supposed to be finalized. I wanted an immediate divorce but agreed to this "favor" because I'm a pushover, feel sorry for her in her helpless state, etc. Also the "deal" is that she's going to make the divorce easy and ask for less than half in the divorce in return for the favor.

So anyway, to make the story more interesting, and leading to my question, she had a medical emergency last year and we had no insurance, and now we owe 50K. We haven't done anything about it .. complete "heads in the sand".

Now we're in the process of negotiating a settlement between us, which we will promise to stick to next year when the legal divorce starts, and she's asking me to give her 15K cash which would completely cover my half of the debt, and then since the debt is in her name and it would be "her problem".

That would be idiotic of me, right?

I know for a fact she's not going to use the money towards the debt and will blow it on other things. And from what I googled, even though the bills are in her name and I never signed anything at the hospital -- they can still come after me for the debt, right?
