    Default Shoplifting in Walmart, California

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I did the dumbest thing ever this past weekend. I decided to steal an item worth $19 from Walmart. The LP officer stopped me at the door, and at that point I cooperated with him and didnt give him any problems. He took me to the back room where he explained what was going to happen to me. He told me about the civil demand that Im going to face, and also made me sign a paper regarding Penal Code 490.5 (C). Which is pretty much the civil demand that he was talking about, which i do plan paying once i know when and how much. He also took down my info, name, address, ssn etc. No finger prints were taken, or pics. He didnt even ban me from the store. This is my first time ever getting in trouble like this, Ive never even gotten a parking or speeding ticket. Im 20 yr old. No police were involved. Ive tried to call the number they gave to me settle the civil demand ASAP, but they said it was going to take about a week before it shows up in the system. Here are my questions.

What are the chances that walmart's lawyers take me to court and sue me?

Im trying to become a nurse, will this affect me in getting into a program or finding a job?

What should i do if i have to go to court?

Will this be on my record?

Ive learned my lesson. Im never going to do anything like this again. I have been feeling guilty for the past days since this happened, and i cant seem to do anything normal because my conscience is killing me.

Thanks in advanced for your post and help. I really appriciate it, and not that im really scared of what is going to happen to me and my future because of this one time stupid decision.

Nobody can tell you exactly what’s going to happen because no one has a crystal ball. However, we can offer an educated guess based on past and collective experiences.

What are the chances that walmart's lawyers take me to court and sue me?
They won’t, if you pay the civil demand.

Im trying to become a nurse, will this affect me in getting into a program or finding a job?
No Police involved, Pay the civil demand, equals no criminal record.

What should i do if i have to go to court?
You won’t, if you pay the civil demand.

Will this be on my record?
You won’t have a record, if you pay the civil demand.

Note: Wal-Mart doesn’t want to waste time and money on court proceedings over a $19 item…therefore they haven’t filed charges and are attempting to settle this “in house” so to speak.

I’m assuming you remained cooperative when apprehended?

Pay the civil demand and you “shouldn’t” have anything else to worry about.

If you choose NOT to pay the demand, it get ugly really quick!
