My question involves a roommate in the State of: Michigan
I'v lived with said roommate for about two and a half years, and everything was fine, we had become good friends and had gone to school together. She allowed her boyfriend to move in with us when he had no were else to go and because he did house chores, but he did not pay any rent or had a job that I knew of.
In the fall of 2009 however after I had gone to visit family out of state , They had decidedly moved her boyfriends mother into the apartment, without consulting me.
After a couple of days I asked if she was staying and when my roommate answer "yes" I told her that if she wanted them both to stay they had to be on the lease and paying rent, and that I would move out.
I had gone to the Main office and talked to the residential manager at the time and she told me that it would be okay if we did that, but if they would no I could call
Two days later, My roomate decided that she didnt want to put them on the lease. So I called the non emergency number to have her boyfriend and his mother forcible removed from the premises. The thing was that I couldnt have the boyfriend removed because after a year he had become a live in resident.
So the following day I gave my thirty day notice to the residential manager, payed my rent and looked for a new apartment. When it came time for me to move out, i gave the manager my keys and a forwarding address for my mail.
Three months later it turns out that My roomate also moved out and without a notice, turning in her keys ,or paying her owed rent.
Now our account has been given to collectors and since I'm the only one who left any information, they keep contacting me, I explained to them what had happened, but because we were both on the lease, we are both equally responsible, I have my payment receipts, but the residential manager who spoke to me no longer works there.
I know where my ex-roomate works, and I have been given her the mail that they send me in her name, but she wont responded to the collector.
