Default Given Speeding Ticket After 3 Stop Lights

My question involves a speeding ticket from the State of: Washington. Can I fight a speeding ticket when the cross roads the officer said he clocked me at were 3 stop lights prior?

Coming home from the drive-in with friends in my car (with another car of friends following directly behind me), I was in the right lane of a 4 lane city road (2 lanes each direction, speed limit is 25) & needed to move over into the left lane for an up coming turn. A car was in the left lane & we were pacing each other, so I sped up to pass & moved into the left lane, then slowed back down to original speed. I didn't need to stop at the first 2 stop lights which were green, but did at the 3rd stop light which was red, and this was where I was making a left turn (now having gone 8 blocks).

I made my turn in to the left lane (again, 4 lane road) & then move into the right lane. At this point, the officer (who was behind my friends car until they made the same turn I had just completed) also made the turn then passed around from behind them & got behind me & flipped his lights on. I had just got 2 more blocks & was going 30 mph, the posted speed.

He asked me "did I know how fast I was going", but before I could answer he said he'd clocked me at 42 in a 25. Then he proceeded to harass me and tell me about other violations he "could" ticket me for but wouldn't, then he gave me a print out of the ticket. Not once during his talk did he state from where he'd clocked me.

When I got home and read the ticket is when I noticed he'd clocked me 10 blocks & 3 stop lights earlier, & he was never directly behind me until after I'd made the last turn at the 3rd stop light.

He also didn't mention using a Lidar gun so I'm assuming he issued me a pace ticket, to the tune of $158! Is there any way to beat this? Thanks!

Why does it matter where you were speeding? And why was it so important for you to speed up and get in front of someone only to cut them off when you were turning off the road anyways?

Some states may have a provision where you can speed up to a certain amount over the limit for a brief period of time to pass someone on a highway, but this is not the case. You could have easily slowed down and got behind the other car and then turned off.

You already admitted you were speeding, so this case was closed just as fast as it opened. Pay the fine, cut your losses, and keep the points off your record by asking for adjudication to be withheld in court or by taking a driver improvement course.

First of all, where you were pulled over, in relation to where the infraction was committed is NOT very relevant. The officer MAY have been stationary at the time he "clocked" you and it took him that long to catch up. Or the officer may have been "running" your plates to see who he was about to pull over (in this day and age, officer's can't be TOO careful).

In any case, this thread contains some information about your options and how to go about them. Read through it, and, if you still have questions, come back and ask. As far as "beating it" goes, you will have to file a discovery request and take a look at the officer's sworn statement. Read through some other threads (like this one, for example) and they should give you an idea of how to proceed.

Oh, in WA "asking for adjudication to be withheld" is called a "deferral". You will find information about that in the first thread I referenced, as well. However, VERY FEW jurisdictions in WA have "driver improvement courses".
