My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
I got caught shoplifting at Macy’s. I caught stealing $122 worth of merchandise. They held me in the back for a couple of hours and made me sign a document saying that I will not be able to go back to Macy’s for three years. They said that I should be expecting a civil claim / civil demand that will make me pay a fine for this incident. I want to know because I was not booked/arrested by the police and I did not sign any citations from the police, will I have to worry about receiving or hearing from the courts regarding this incident?
The guy said that they tried to call the police department to come get me but they were busy, so they decided to let me go. I want to know if the courts will ever notify me to go to court regarding this incident? Does Macy’s report these incidents to the police department for further action?
I am very concerned because I am on informal probation right now. I asked somebody else and they said that I will not have to worry about the courts or the police because I never signed any citations and was never assigned a specific "appear in court" date.
