Exclamation Threatened With Disclosure of Past History of Stealing

law in the state of florida:

I am being threatened to have information revealed about me when i was 17ish and would regularly steal from our horrible little chain grocery store by some guy i used to work with who is mad i no longer speak to him. i haven't worked at that store for two years now but he informed me in an email "i wonder what would happen if anyone cross referenced information from the front desk say about 2 years ago to catch anyone helping customers get discounts and doing fake refunds"

i know my wrong doings but i haven't stolen the slightest thing since working there. it was stupid of me to do anything or take anything that was not mine but that ridiculous adolescence took over. I'm not AS stupid now but im worried on how this is going to come back to me if this guy opens up his mouth. isnt there a time period that if they haven't caught you yet then its pretty much too bad on their side because they had a certain amount of time. do i move out of the country >_< i need help =/

according to the guy that messaged me they keep their videos stored online and have been storing them for longer than i worked there. since i quit two years ago they have caught over 6 people stealing but none of them received any harsh penalty i think one girl stole 8 dollars and she had a court date but they dismissed it on account of how minor it was. i wont get off that lucky.

what do i do... i still shop there and still speak with the clerks and the managers and i are on good terms... it appears as though no one has noticed.. but when someone does notice if they ever do would i be in the clear?

How much was the total amount of theft worth?

There is a statute of limitations, but you also would have to deal with a very large civil demand.

Your friend, however, cannot extort you either.

It has been a while so I do not recall exactly, it had to of been less than 10,000 but according to limitations anything over 5,000 is 4 years if im not mistaken. Ill take the higher road and say im at that level as far as limitations go since i cant recall but i know i did it often. things add up...

could you please explain about the large civil demand i dont quite understand that?

im sure that "friend" cant do anything himself but i am afraid of him saying soemthing that would spark an interest in them looking over the tapes.

my MAIN concern is that the video recording company is seperate from the grocery store, if for whatever reason down the road someone decides they are bored and feel like looking through those tapes would i still be liable for going to prison if my statue of limitations has run out?

i was never once caught, i was never told anything, and even the managers at that store steal. i dont want to be a whistleblower but i know i am not the only one that has done wrong at this grocery store. i was just one of the few that had yet to of been caught.

and another quick question, would i count my statue of limitations from the very first day that i took something or my very last day... i assume im better off counting it from the day i quit

It doesn't matter what anyone else did or did not do. If your first inclination is to say, "They did it WORSE", you are just wasting this board's time.

If you stole over $5000, you are deeply into felony territory. Further, I have learned that when you ask someone what they stole, you automatically double the actual amount. You are correct that the SOL is 4 years... I believe... I will look up the statutes to make sure, but that sounds right.

You have jumped to grand larceny... this goes far beyond teenage craziness. Most teenagers do not steal several thousand dollars in several hundred transactions.

If this is brought to the attention of the authorities, I would plan on getting an excellent lawyer to avoid a long stay in prison.

thats why im sticking to the higher side of the limitations since i dont know the exact number. i tried as hard as possible to put that time frame completely behind me, for all i know i might just be completely exaggerating out of fear and i may have just stolen on the lower side of the limitations. but if i last those four years without anything being said or happening then would i be "scott free" from what ive done?

If a warrant is not issued within the statute of limitations, then no warrant can be issued.
