MIP in Maryland - Sealed Container

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maryland.

I'm 20 years old and was given a citation for Minor in possession of alcoholic beverages (10-114). My friend who is 21 asked me to briefly hold a sealed bottle while he put his wallet away, which we explained to the officer. At that time i was confronted by a plain clothes officer and given the citation. I had not been drinking nor was i breathalyzed, I have never been in trouble before and do not even have a speeding ticket. My question is how serious is this in the state of maryland and does anyone know the consequenses for a first offense. any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

In the state of Maryland, an MIP is a civil offense, punishable by a fine of $500. No jail time.

How long were you in possession of this sealed container? In your shoes, I would discuss the situation with an attorney. First consultation is usually free, s/he may have some tips for arguing for a dismissal.

i was holding it for literally ten seconds while he put his wallet into his pocket.. I had spoke to an attorney who suggested talking to the prosecutors office and trying to ask for a diversion program, does anyone have any experience with this or how to go about doing such.

my main concern is keeping this off my record or getting it exponged as quickly as possible.
