Default Denied Public Defender for Underage Possession

I went to court for an Underage Possession of Alcohol charge, and asked for a public defender. They said I could either plead no contest or go to trial, in which case I would have to pay for my own attorney. I do qualify for a public defender, but they said because it was a nonjailable offense they would not give me one. Isn't it my right to be appointed a public defender?

well, in some states, which you so conveniently failed to supply even after being asked, they do not provide PD's for non-jailable offenses. It would appear you are in one of those states so no, you do not have a right to a PD.
