Question Changing 8 month olds name to fathers surname

When my son was born we gave him my lastname for insurance purposes, butnow we would like to give him his father's last name. His fathersigned the acknowledgement of paternity papers and is an active father and we are getting married. Will his father have to adopt him or can we just file papers for a name change? thanks

You should be able to petition a court for a name change. The procedures would vary by state - this type of matter is usually handled by a county family court or probate court.
