    Default Theft of a Pet

My ex-friend lives next door to me. She was a good friend until we had a falling out and one bad thing has led to another. Now she is trying to accuse me of stealing her cat. She called me and said she has a witness who saw me with her cat in her backyard (untrue)on the day it was stolen. By the way I used to watch her cat sometimes when she was at school during the day. Nonetheless, I am trying to find out if I should hire an attorney. I told her I no longer wanted to talk to her and to stop calling me. Can she charge me with anything? This is in MD.

You either have her cat or you don't. If you don't, and had nothing to do with her cat's disappearance, then there's not really anything you can do but wait and see if this blows over.

I don't have her cat, I am allergic to cats and have enough responsibility with a child. I'm only trying to protect myself as I prefer to be on the offensive.

Being on the offensive is not always the right move.

She absolutely can accuse you of stealing the cat. But then she has to perform the trick of proving that you did.

You don't have the cat, you've not been charged with anything, there's no need to seek an attorney. No sense in buying trouble, just let her bluster and spin her wheels.
