Default Ex-Employer Saying Theft Without Proof or Charges

My question involves defamation in the state of: TN
My most recent employer terminated me over the telephone without an explanation. I have heard just today and have confirmed by two friends of mine that he has told that I sold his merchandise in a "secret online auction account" and then didn't give him his funds. Stealing. My account of course is online and public, very public with detailed record keeping and feedback. I did sell personally through my account which was permissible. They have an inventory system that would show if the items were missing from the inventory and they could be EASILY tracked and traced through my account. I live in a small town and this will certainly affect future employment besides the humiliation and stigma that goes with being tagged as a thief. Does this meet the "test" for defamation, slander and libel. I did not steal, I did not sell anything of theirs through my personal account and need to act swiftly to stop this from being communicated. Thanks

I will certainly keep me from getting a job and may have already not to mention my reputation within the community. What resources should I look to for legal counsel. Without a job, I don't have disposable funds for a high powered attorney?

Now my ex-employer is appealing my unemployment benefits nearly two months after my termination. I have still not had a conversation with any law enforcement, and it has been 6 days since I e-mailed the Chief of Police and asked who I could speak with that might be investigating me with no reply??? I am feeling really confused and harassed.
