Default Girlfriend Needs Adopted Father Off Birth Certificate

My question involves paternity law for the State of: Tennessee

My girlfriend was adopted by her mother's husband at the age of 7, when she was 12 he raped her. She needs to get him off of her birth certificate and change her last name. We do not have a lot of money and are unsure of what our options are. What can we do to get this man out of her life and sever all ties to him? Your help is greatly appreciated.

    How old is she now?

If she is over the age of 18, she would first need to file a petition for a legal name change in her county's Chancery Court (there is a sample form here).

After the name change is granted, she would need to file for an amended birth certificate.

She is currently 28. Any idea as too how much this would cost and how long this process may take. We are broke but having this constant reminder is affecting her mentally

Please remember though that without an adult adoption, he'll still be listed as her father.

Name change fees and time frames vary by jurisdiction. Contact the local Chancery Court for a fee schedule. I've seen it as low as $25 and as high as $100. Time frames can be anywhere from a few weeks to a couple months.

The birth certificate change should be around $15 or so. You'll need to check with Vital Statistics.

If you take her to the courthouse and get married she can legally change her name that way as well. It would be the fastest and least expensive way to go.

Also remembering that OP was asking how to have Dad removed from the birth certificate - again, this isn't going to happen without an adult adoption taking place

So to get him off of the birth certificate she has to be adopted by someone else? How is an adult adopted? Just want to clarify and never knew an adult could be adopted.
