    Default Driver Reversed into Cyclist

    This occured in California

Last week a car reversed out of a garage into my boyfriend while he was on his electric bike.

The dirver stopped and got out and asked if he was ok.

He was very shaken up and didn't realise the car had hit and bruised his leg and damaged the bike somewhat.

Unfortunately he sufferes from shyness and he doesn't like speaking to strangers so he rode off saying he was ok.

I took him back to the scene later that day to see if we could identify the house but he wasn't sure.

We put some leaflets through doors and on lamp posts asking the driver to come forward but only had one response - from a drunk person asking if it was an April fool.

We went to the local police station to report it and asked if the police could help find the driver. We tought they could look up the owner of a white SUV in that block, for example.

The policeman said the street where it happened wasn't his area division and didn't seem very helpful other than doing the report.

I am wondering what kind of settlement we could expect if we found the driver - weather it is worth staking them out. I also wonder we could expect help from the police who cover the area where it happened.

    Thanks for any comments

If you pursue this, find out the policman responsible for the subsection. It would be a big problem if he can't even identify the house.

No, there would be not big payout as it appears he did not even go to the hospital emergency. At best, if he repaired his bike, or got estimates for the repairs, that is all he can expect to collect.

Since you did not indicate the amount of the damage, or estimates, we cannot determine if it's worth the bother from here.

Do you know what the licensing/insurance requirements for an electric bike? It may be that he needs to be insured etc, and therefore by reporting it to the police may be admitting to breaking the law.

I'm not sure either way - just saying to consider the risk that he may get one or more tickets himself, and that may wind up being more than the damage to the bike.
