Default No Proof of Insurance on a Recently Purchased Car

My question involves insurance law for the state of: california
I got pulled over today for no seat belt, and since i had recently bought the car(10 days ago) i had not had a chance to insure it. But i do have insurance on my two other vehicles, just not this one.
I got cited for both no proof of insurance and seat belt.
The seat belt fine i will pay no hassles, but im curious as to whether what will happen about the no proof of insurance.
I have been told that if i purchase a car that my insurance will cover it for some 15 days until i get the paperwork all straightend out.
Another thing is that i havent registered the car under my name yet. Is my proof of insurance for my other vehicles enough or should i get it insured completly and take that proof to the judge?
Im very confused here as to what i should do, any help or advice is appreciated. thanks.
    -marcos.

Contact your insurer/agent and see if they will give you proof that you were covered at the time of the stop. If so, then show that to the traffic clerk and the insurane violation should be dismissed after you pay an administrative fee of $25.

If not, then get your vehicle insured, take proof that you are now covered to your arraignment, show proof to the judge and you may get a fine reduction...
