My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Michigan
Wondering if anyone could help me by giving me advice with my current situation:
I was a cosigner on a rental apartment lease for a friend a couple years back. The agreement I signed to cosign was for a one year lease that expired 3 years ago in 2007. I did not cosign any other renewal lease of any sort. And I was not contacted by rental company regarding that issue. I guess my friend ended up staying there for 3 more years. Recently he decided to leave without giving a 30 day. A lawyer is trying to sue me for that amount that the renter defaulted in 2009. He said I am responsible based on some lease continuation law even though I did not cosign any renewal lease.
My question: As a cosigner of an expired lease. Am I still responsible for any infractions the renter made after the expired lease date? Is there some continuation law that extends my cosign on the lease automatically without permission?
