    Post Disregard Traffic Control Device

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Michigan.

Hi, I'm 18 and this is my first ever ticket. I was driving through an unfamiliar part of town with loads of one-way streets and traffic signs, and I came upon a sign that said "Right Turn Only". For some reason I must have had a brain fart--I thought that it meant I couldn't turn left, but was still allowed to go straight through the intersection. The street was not a one-way.

So I crossed that street, no cars were coming in either direction, and I continued driving and then those lovely flashing police lights were behind me.

I am going to fight this ticket for my parents' insurance's sake, but do you think I actually have any chance of getting off easy? It IS my first ever moving violation, and in my defense, I was majorly confused and my car was really foggy from just starting up, plus it was raining and my windshield wipers are terrible. Though it is my fault that I didn't understand what the sign meant.

Thanks for any information you guys can give me!

You can try negotiating for a lesser offense, such as obstructing traffic, or see if the prosecutor will be sympathetic enough to dismiss on costs.

Would I be correct in assuming that you also disregarded "Wrong Way / Do Not Enter" signs for the one-way stretch of road in front of you?

It was not a One way street. The road I was on continued across the intersection in both directions, and the road I was crossing also continued in two directions.

For some reason, at that intersection, I was only allowed to turn right, not straight or left, even though all options would have worked had there not been a "Right Turn Only" sign. I had assumed the sign meant No Left Turn, and that going straight across was legal.
