Default Accidentally Stealing From My Company

Hi, I am faced with quite a dilemma.

I had 2 pieces of computer equipment. 1 personal and 1 from my company. They are the same model and make but obviously different serial number. I brought the company one home to practice on.

I sold my personal computer equipment on the internet but shipped
the company one. They look exactly the same. I asked UPS 3 times to return the package while it was in transit but they failed and sent to receiver. The receiver does not want to send the package back.

Should I tell the receiver that the package belongs to my company's ?

Should I tell my company what I did?

Why would you take the company one home to practice on if you had an identical machine at home that you could already use? If I understand that, I may have a better understanding of how this might be explainable to your employer.

Hi. Most of the time I need more than 2 pieces of computer equipment too practice on. I take the equipment home quite often either to practice on or finish preparing the equipment to go live at the company.

Then presumably your employer will understand how the confusion could have occurred. You can thus consider explaining the situation and making an appropriate replacement or restitution.

    Thanks for your response.

Is it possible that my employer will see this as grounds for dismissal ?

There is certainly that possibility, particularly if your employer doesn't believe you. But if you go in willing to write a check for the full replacement value, and can prove your ownership of the identical unit, your employer will likely be more receptive to your version of events.

Default Accidental stealing from my company

What happens if the employer finds out before I tell them my story?

Also, what happens if I Leave the company and they find out after the fact?

    Just brainstorming.

    Any other options?
