My question involves a roommate in the State of: Hawaii
I rented an apartment and my roommate and I each put down half the security deposit. Our lease term was up and converted to month-to-month. I gave 28 days notice (as stated in rental agreement) to both roommate and property manager and even stayed an extra half a month. I moved out, cleaned my room, left the keys, and returned with a check for my share of the utilities.
I asked my ex roommate for my share of the security deposit (even if in bits and pieces, like $50/month) but she says we agreed to get a place together and I chose to move out so I just have to wait till she moves out.
When I moved out the property manager refused to do a walk through (so I'd know how much of any deduction from deposit would be my responsibility). I have my own bills and/or may need that money for deposit at a new place. Is there ANY way to get my deposit or do I really have to wait??
**Note: I have tried to be civil but am not receiving the same respect in return. When I lived there I had wanted to take over the lease but others' discouraged me from "kicking (them) out" even though she violated the rental agreement in some ways. So I've tried to be thoughtful and fair. Am I just screwed for being a caring person or can I take her to small claims court?
