Default Layover in the United States

Hey, I'm new here and registered here to see if anybody could help me with a question I have.

I was deported from the United States (California) in 2004 for committing a violent felony, for which I served 9 years in prison. I'm presently in Japan, and wish to go to Mexico this summer for vacation. The only problem is that all of the flights have a layover in the U.S. Is it possible to transfer planes in the U.S. even if I am a deportee? Or would they send me back to Japan?

Hope somebody out there can help me.
    Thanks in advance...

You may be able to travel through if you don't have to go through customs to board the new flight.
