    Default Liability for Hospital Bills Incurred by Soon-to-Be Ex-Wife

    have a question. my soon to be ex-wife occured many hospital bills over the years now collection agencys have put them on my credit report,I did not occur these or recieve medical treatment,is this legal and/or is there a law on this or any recourse?

    Often the medical treater will ask a spouse to contract to pay the other spouse's medical costs. Did you enter into any such contracts?

    I understand that Michigan has abolished the common law necessities doctrine, meaning that you can only be held responsible for your wife's medical bills to the extent that you contracted to be liable for those bills. So demand that the collection agencies confirm the debts, and demand that the original creditors produce the contract you signed.
