I really hope this is the right place to be posting this. I don't know much about legal/law issues so all the different threads are confusing

I sent packages to someone written off as gifts (no tax paid) totaling about $9,000.00. They promised in several emails to pay me off but one day they disappeared. I have never met this person and I know it was dumb. I have realized they lied about their name, home address, and I don't have their telephone number. The address where the packages were sent is not helpful. I did a reverse lookup and they have no idea who this person is. They said someone came to collect the packages in their name stating they lived a few blocks away and there was a mix up in their address.

I obtained their IP address from emails and it traces back to the same zip code as where the packages were sent. I am guessing the person who I am talking to either lives near where the packages were sent and is trying to cover their tracks or they do live in that house but lied about their name.

What can I do next? Would I even be able to sue since I have no information or real record of who this person is? Even if the person I have been talking to does live in that house, how would I be able to prove it? I'd have to get a court order to track their IP to an exact address, I am assuming? But even so, how do I tell who in the household was doing it. I am blessed to be well off but I have worked hard for my money and the fact that this person just disappeared after lying to me is what is making me want to go further. Would a PI be able to help? Or am I just wasting my time?
