get off your high horse man.

first off all, i didn't "got away" with anything. when you go to the biometrics appointment,
the security at the door check your ID to see if it matches the name on the appointment notice, no one checks the expiration date on it and no one will deny you from entering the building if it is. in fact there is nowhere on the appointment notice anything that says
that the ID must be valid they just ask for a photo ID.

second, i didn't "pranced" in there with illegal status. once a person file his petition his presence here becomes legal until a decision is made on his petition, therefor no one can "tag" anyone for deportation because a petition must be filed before they call you for biometrics. next time check your facts before posting BS like that.

lastly, allow me to quote the OP
"... Now here is the thing.... if you don't have a passport, or a "non-expired" driver license, or military photo id, or state-issued photo id..."
just by reading that i can and will assume the OP has an illegal status otherwise he wouldn't had this problem to begin with.
so, again, TRUST ME on this one because i don't give bad information as an advise, in fact
when i don't know i don't post anything but I'm sure as f#@k don't post "sometimes yes, sometimes no" as if saying "maybe yes maybe no i don't really know"
Thank you both for the replies...
As Janstep mentioned, it is not only not easy to get a DL from the DMV if a person has an illegal status, it is actually impossible without a good SSN.

As the appointment has pass I can say that also Janstep is correct in the statement made about the office only checking that the name matches the application, hence that is all that happened.

However here is the flip side, to the comment LawReseachMissy made about "sometimes yes/sometimes no" .... immigration was called and we were told, that not "all" offices accept the exprired DL, to go to the appointment and if they don't accept it, they will let you know what to do and if any other type of identification will be accepted.

My experience, I'd say that they take it everywhere, considering that, as Janstep said they know that you are there on the grounds to become legalized, chances are that of course you have not been able to aquire a current ID/DL.

I hope that this all made sense! Again thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.

Have a great day!!
