I went to my local grocery store today and brought along the packs of heartburn medication that my husband bought for me that was the wrong kind. He bought me three packs of a small package of one kind and 2 small packages of another, and luck had it, he was wrong on both.
I went up to the return counter, with the meds in hand and told them the situation and asked if they would do a return even if the receipt couldn't be found. He said he'd have to call the manager.
After waiting and waiting, this guy finally comes up and asks me what the situation is. I tell him the same thing. The first thing out of his mouth is that he doesn't believe my "story". I was taken aback. What way is that to treat a customer? If the answer is no, just say no, right? He said, "I'll be back in a second, I'm going to check some things in the computer." He came back and said that "this exact combination was never purchased in the store and he is thinking of charging me with return fraud."
At this point I am completely shell shocked. I told him that maybe my husband bought them from another store, that we just normally shop here so I came to see if they would return it or not. Again, he tells me that he doesn't believe my story. Then he continues on to say that he doesn't know what mental or physical problems I have that I would need three boxes of medicine!
I was so completely offended by this point it is beyond comprehension. I told him that he had no right to tell me I had mental problems for needing heartburn medication! Then I told him to go ahead and charge me, I didn't do anything wrong, and asked him to show me proof that I did wrong.
He then tells me that he's not going to call the cops. I tell him that I am never going to shop here again and I am telling everyone I know how I was treated today. I was amazed because I was so calm on the outside, never raising my voice or anything but I was ripping apart on the inside!!!
What is the definition of return fraud? If someone forgets they bought something at one place and returns it in another is this return fraud? I would appreciate a translation of the law if anyone could help me out in that.
I know that in my "mind" I didn't do anything wrong, but maybe there's a law I didn't know about, and before I go contacting corporate headquarters about my treatment I want to know the law.
P. S. This occurred in Minnesota.
