Default Traffic Violation Led to a Misdemeanor

My question involves traffic court in the State of: California

I got a citation back in 2003 and my case was an infraction and i was making payments on my ticket and lost track of it and realized it in my recent background check that it turned into a misdemenor (failure to appear in court), this is affecting me from getting a great job opportunity, Please advice on what steps can be taken to get this off my record as soon as possible i had to start work this monday but was not able to because of this on my record. I am unemployed right now.

Contact the court right away, preferably in-person, and schedule an appearance ASAP so you can explain the situation to the judge and the judge will probably drop it down to an infraction as long as you plead no contest - having the money to settle the bill on the spot will greatly help your case, as well. Make sure you mention to the judge that a misdemeanor conviction would prevent you from being employed and also hang on to the copy of the minute order the court gives you. You'll want to show this to your employer because it might take a while for the cleared charge to propagate through all the BI databases.

On an unrelated note, it shows how terrible the economy actually is. It used to be that only felonies and 'hard' misdemeanors (e.g. DUI or misdemeanor Domestic Violence) posed a problem with employment, but to outright torpedo someone's job over a piddly FTA/FTP charge is just ridiculous.

Hi...thank you so much for your reply...i did contact the court and i paid the amount in full and they said it would take upto 72 hours to get that into the system starting monday and i asked them i could make an appointment to see the judge and she said that it wont be possible because its a minor issue and judge wont be able to see me on this..I am trying everything possible and running out of options..please suggest what would be the best solution or a quicker solution to get this out of my record.

With this current economy they should be helping out the citizens of this country to get a job and not make it harder for them to get one because of such petty issues, really upset and worried i dont want to loose this job opportunity because of this...any suggestions would be of great help.

p.s. thank you so much for you help...
