Default Is a FBI Identification Record Different from a FBI File

    NY

a "no record found" response means FBI doesnt have ANY records?

I have read that a FBI identification record is not the same as an FBI file.

does this mean that even if the FBI identification record (submitted with fingerprints) shows that I have no record, the FBI may have "a file" on me and therefore may disseminate that "file?"

how may I find out everything, not just a rap sheet, that the FBI has on me?

If you want to obtain those portions of your FBI file that the FBI is willing to release, you follow this process. It's possible that portions of your file will be redacted. You want access to those, join the FBI and get an appropriately high security clearance.

so is it safe to say that if I get a "no record found" response found in that process that you linked me to

then the FBI will release "no record found" to anyone (barring law enforcement/firearm sales) who asks?

Doesn't the FBI have a file on just about everyone???? Seriously. It's the public ones we need to be concerned about here...right???

    well yea i suppose so

does that mean that whatever they disclose to me
is the same one that will be disclosed to everybody that asks for it (employers--including federally chartered banks but not including law enforcement and firearms?)

I would assume Federal agencies would get the full deal. In other words, should you apply for a position with the CIA, FBI, Homeland security....they would have everything. Banks, other employers...I think you're ok. However, you ask the question as if there is something that should be on there that is not showing. Know anyone who has a close friend who's an FBI agent??? That may be the only way to know for sure.

Last I read, the FBI had files on something like 39 million Americans.

well, is it only the public ones that we are concerned about?
or are other, more confidential records also of concern because certain govt agencies may be entitled to them?

    the SEC, for one
