At Will Termination Without a Reason

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Wisconsin

I was terminated from my job. when i asked why all the ONLY thing that i was told was "you are an at will employee". Then they told me that they would not deny my unemployment and to state that i was "laid off" not terminated. The only write up i had in my file was 4 months earlier for not given ample notice for a sick day.
Is this legal? but more importantly; how do i find out WHY i got fired?

It's absolutely legal, and they are not required to give you a reason for terminating your employment.

If you file for unemployment, then they are mandated to disclose the reason for seperation.

Wait and see if they say laid off due to the economy, etc. or fired without cause, which is legal, but may help receive unemployment benefits.

They've already indicated what they plan to tell unemployment - that the worker was "laid off". With that report and the fact that they're not going to fight an unemployment award, that may be all the explanation she gets.

That was to her personally, you can bet that may not mean diddly later.

If they are not contesting benefits, they do not have to tell the UI office a blessed thing.

There is no legal right to know the reason for the separation. While I am not necessarily defending the employer's methods, the fact of the matter is that Elizabeth may never know the reason, and the law does not give her the right to know it.
