Default Credit Card and Medical Responsibility

My husband recently passed away, there is no estate, nor any life insurance policy. Am I responsible for credit card and medical debt? Most of the companies have just written the amount of but I am having problems with 1 credit card company and 1 medical bill, the hospital wants me to provide pay check stubs, tax info and bank statements. I do not feel comfortable giving all this info. Am I required to do so? I live in Utah

Default Re: Credit Card and Medical Responsibility

Utah law holds both spouses responsible for "family expenses", including the cost of medical care, so the hospital presumably wants to see if you have the resources to pay them before agreeing to write off the debt.
Quote Quoting Utah Code, Sec. 30-2-9. Family expenses - Joint and several liability.
The expenses of the family and the education of the children are chargeable upon the property of both husband and wife or of either of them, and in relation thereto they may be sued jointly or separately.
