Default Charged with Conspiracy to Commit Larceny in the 6th Degree

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Connecticut.

Long story short, me and two of my friends were arrested last week. Friend A decided to go steal a propane grill from behind a pharmacy, while I and Friend B stayed behind at Friend B's house, wanting nothing to do with it. 20 minutes later, Friend A came back and when we went outside to talk with him, had the grill in hand. Not 2 minutes later, the police showed up. While Friend A admitted to the whole thing on the spot, the police still brought Friend B and I in on charges of conspiracy for larceny in the 6th because we were with the stolen property, while Friend A received a charge for the actual larceny.

Our court dates are on the first, and I'm pretty much flying blind. I have absolutely no money for an attorney, and neither do they.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you cannot afford a lawyer, you need to request a court-appointed lawyer.

I would be interested to learn what facts are being alleged to support the claim that this was a conspiracy. Did the thief use one of your vehicles? He did bring the stolen grill to Friend B's house. Were you sitting in front of a big pile of uncooked steaks or burgers?

Sorry for not providing more information.

No vehicle was used. Friend A dragged the thing back to Friend B's property on foot. There is one witness, a security guard, who saw only him take it. And again, he admitted the whole thing to the police, as far as I recall.

I had no part in this, and wanted no part in this. I just happened to be near the grill with those other two at the time of the arrest.

    Edit:

Also, I'd like to point out that this whole thing has made me a wreck. I've had no experience with the court system before, and I'm absolutely terrified. I don't want to be branded a thief for something I didn't even do (unless CT law considers it a crime to be near stolen property?)

The whole thing has made it hard for me to sleep, eat, or function well at college. And to be honest, I'm absolutely terrified of having this thing delayed if I request a public defender, even though I know I'll probably need one. I just really want this to be over so I don't feel like my life has to be on hold anymore.

    Thanks for any further advice.

Good news, I was able to hire an attorney to help me out.

If this thread could be deleted, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
