Default Recieved Offer Letter then Date Pushed Back

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: NJ
I recieved an offer letter for a job and accepted the position. It clearly states a start date. I was employed at another job but two days prior to the start date I was told that due to the delay in the this business opening the doors for the first time that the job would not start for another 30 to 45 days. Can they legally delaly my start date without paying me. I gave notice to my other job and left. Now I do not have a job. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you have a signed contract stating otherwise, you do not get paid until you earn your dollars. If you have not worked, then you have not earned them

Yes, they can legally push back your start date, particularly since the business hasn't even opened yet, and no, they don't have to pay you if you are not working yet.

You can, however, apply for unemployment for the intervening time. It's not a guarantee but there's a reasonable chance of your qualifying, at least in NJ.
