My son's girlfriend recently called the police and stated that he had stolen her purse. To make a long story short, there was nothing in the purse of any value, she left it in his car and when he didn't return at his expected time, she called the police to have him picked up. They arrested him even though the police officer informed me that he was not "comfortable" with her story. He spent a good deal of time advising her of other options but she was angry and wanted him arrested. The next day, she went in to drop the charges (after thinking about what she had done) and was told by the police officer that if she changed her story they would arrest her and have her locked up. That succeeding in closing her mouth for good and now my son is facing a charge for something he did not do. He is in the process of enlisting in the military and if his recruiter finds out, there goes his future. We tried to talk to the DA but they would not listen and insist upon moving forward with the case. I don't know why the court would not listen to rational people but rather choose to waste our money on a case like this. He was in court, with his girlfriend who is now trying to get someone to listen to her to drop the charges, but no one will give us the time of day unless we hire an attorney. I have a big problem with the fact that the police "felt" that she was not telling the truth, but had no problem arresting and charging this young man regardless of the effect on his life and his future. Isn't it innocent until proven guilty? Apparently not. Isn't there punishment for wrongful arrest? What are his options? Can he have this dismissed in exchange for his going in to the military which is his current course? How do I get anyone to listen to us??
