My question involves a roommate in the State of: NJ
Back in October, as a result of myriad personal problems, I needed to find a new apartment quick. An acquaintance of mine was in a similar situation so we agreed to move in together (much to my regret). I signed the lease, and put all the bills in my name. From moving day, this guy has been a nightmare. He bullied me into his taking the Master suite (even though the lease is in my name), been in my room while I was sleeping (I'm a female), been consistently late with rent (lame excuses), and I only just got a portion of the bill money yesterday! I've come to find out he has at least three judgements against him in terms of non-payment, including a lien on his bank account due to his recent eviction.
Needless to say I'm fed up with this jerk and his antics. Since he is not on the lease, does the law regard him as a lodger? Am I within my rights to call the police and have him removed? Or do I need to go through costly court proceedings and go through the eviction process?
