My question involves traffic court in the State of: California
Hello people,
I got a ticket for caltrain fare evasion and went to the court. After hearing me explain the incident the judge dismissed my case with me just paying the 25 dismissal fee. However, when I checked via the "pay your fine online" link on the court website (South San Mateo) it says on the citation information that "Our records show a status of conviction on this case. For additional information, please contact the court."
I was confused so I called the court, the officer said that all it means is that my case is closed and cleared. I was still puzzled so I asked if I am convicted, and the lady said they are different terminologies.
I am still very puzzled. The office lady just does not seem to be able to fully communicate with me. I would appreciate if someone could explain what does this "conviction" mean. Why is that the judge said dismissal but still a "status of conviction". In particular, since I am a foreign student here, do I have to tick yes or no when asked if I have ever been convicted of any offense, for visa application.
Thank you for your help.
