My question involves name change laws...
I am interested in how to amend the spelling of a father's name on a birth certifcate in the State of Maryland. I also am interested in how to amend the spelling of a name on a marriage certificate in Washington DC.
My grandparents were immigrants from Italy in 1909 and never naturalized. My father was born in the USA and I was born in the USA. Italian law through the principle of juris sanguinus (blood right) allows me to request to be recognized as an Italian citizen. I am in the process of seeking dual citizenship in USA and Italy. This involves establishiing my paternal blood line to the satisfaction of the Italian government.
My father was born with an Italian first and last name, but grew up using an anglicized verison of both his first and last name. He married and fathered me using this anglicized name, and also died using this anglicized name.
The Italian authorities require me to have my parent's marriage certificate and my birth certificate amended to use his Italian first and last name.
I have supporting documents from USCIS and SSA that show my grandfather also used this anglicized last name and that both my father's Italian name and his anglicized name are associated with the same SSN. This is not sufficient for Italy - hence the need for the amendments.
I am seeking information and advice on how to change/amend the spelling of my father's name on my parent's marriage certificate and on my birth certificate?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Carlo
