    Default Subtenant 30 Day Notice

My question involves a roommate in the State of: California

I am subletting a room from an adult woman "A". Also subletting is another adult woman "B". Neither "B" nor I am on the lease, only the first lady "A". There is no written rental agreement between "A" and myself, just a verbal agreement to pay $475/month. There was no initial deposit. To cut the issue to the point, am I legally obligated to give 30 days notice? If yes, does the livability of the room have any bearing on how much notice I need to give?

When I viewed the room everything was in reasonably good order. The place was clean but after I moved in it just got worse and worse and now I am honestly uncomfortable doing such things as taking a shower and doing anything that requires me to touch the countertops in the kitchen because they are constantly covered in crumbs, leftover spills and other sticky things - none of them mine. I have guests over who will not use the bathroom here - how embarrassing. Plus "A" gives me drama and complaints every time I ask for something simple - today it was a request that if she is going to use my good knives, to please wash them after she was done and not leave them on the countertops or try to use them to chip 2 day old hardened caramel blobs off of the inside of the microwave.

More seriously, there are other problems:
-She has deliberately disconnected the smoke alarm. It has not been connected for the duration of my stay here (since September)
-Her cat is tearing up the carpet to the point where there are bare patches with particle board exposed underneath. More than one of my guests has stepped on a nail exposed on the bathroom threshold because of the cat's damage (I have too - I'm sure a tetanus shot is in my future)
-There is filth in the bathroom - she keeps her cat box in there and does not sift it at all, just does a complete change weekly - it always reeks in there, and currently there is cat litter all over the bathroom floor and cat poop smears over the side of the tub that has been there for several days. I offered to help her sift the box a few days a week just for my own sanity, and now she leaves it all to my responsibility.
-Mold growing around tub fixtures. Not much but it is there.
-Tub backs up significantly with each use - a 5 minute shower leaves you standing ankle deep, at least, in water. Refuses to call maintenance for anything because of the extra animals in the house that are not on the lease.
-The other animals in the house were not on flea control and due to this, when I unwittingly took over litterbox duty for her cat, I realized that he was infested with tapeworms (which means pretty much everybody has been exposed to that - ewww)

I moved in being honest with her that I had a bird and wanted to get a cat. She said that was totally fine, besides, roommate "B" has a small dog and a cat in her room herself. I did not find out until just recently that the reason she dodges maintenance is because these animals should be on the lease and are not. This was not disclosed to me at the initiation of the rent agreement. I don't know if that amounts for anything or not but that's how it is.

Where do I stand here? I want to get out - I feel nauseated being here, I really do, and I am not the fastidious sort. Thanks for your time.

The agreement is for a month to month tenancy?

    Yes.

If yes, does the livability of the room have any bearing on how much notice I need to give?
No. There's no "landlord doesn't clean, so you only need to give two weeks" exception.
