My question involves real estate located in the State of: california

I recently bought a foreclosed home in San Clemente, CA from the bank (REO). the previous owner had removed the roof tiles and started a whole house remodel when he was foreclosed on by the bank. The roof tiles and the condition of the home was what I purchased. I now received a letter from this previous owner stating that the roof tiles are his personal property and he wants them back. Is this a viable claim after nine months and two owners later and is it really personal property or part of real property?
