Default Public underage drinking and trespassing charge

I am 18 and live in New Jersey. Me and some friends were intoxicated in a public park past its open hours. The police came and interrogated us about the backpack we had, and they searched and found beer inside. All of us but one were underage. The 21 year old admitted to buying us the alcohol. In the end, we were all written tickets for only trespassing in violation of "BO 17-1.6" and they let us go home after dumping out all the beers and throwing the cans away. I know nothing about law, and am wondering if the cop let us go with only a trespassing charge, or will the underage intoxication in public be brought up on the court date on April 18th? Also, I will be out of state on the day of my assigned court date, and have had these plans for months. (visiting my father in north carolina from the 15th until the 24th of April) The plane tickets are already payed for, and I have a planned college meeting during that week. Is the enough to get a court date changed(if even possible)? I really don't know what to do.

It sounds like you were ticketed only for trespass; but I can't be certain.

If you aren't going to work through a lawyer, you will need to contact the court and explain the situation, to see if you can get an adjournment. I do not know if they will require a formal motion; that will depend upon local procedure.

I will not be working through a lawyer. Is it better to call and explain the situation, or actually go the court in person?

It is sometimes easier to do this type of thing in person, but it depends upon your proximity to the courthouse. If it will take a lot of time to go to the court, you may wish to try first asking by phone.

While you are there, they should also be able to look up your case file to determine precisely what charges have been filed.

Getting a court date after your friends go to court may be helpful, as you should know in advance of your own court date what plea deal they were offered.
