It is possible.
You can be fired at any time with or without reason or notice. This is referred to as "at will" employment.
The only offset to this is if you are fired for a reason specifically named in labor law. These reasons all figure around protected classes of person... you cannot be fired for your race, national origin, sex, etc.
There is one state I know of where your criminal record could be argued as a member of such a class (though it specifically names felons) but it is not California.
If your job involved retail or money, you could find this a real issue.
