My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan.
Hi guys, so here's how the story goes...
I was in Michigan for a family event....on the last night I was there my cousin picked me up from my aunts house and we were about to smoke a joint in some parking lot. This was around 2:00am.
The cops came and busted us and gave us both a simple possession charge...and also a loitering charge....i've since returned back to canada...
this is my first offense and i've never been in any kind of trouble like this before.
unfortunately i found out the hard way that weed is a big deal down there, unlike up here in good ol' canada.
now i know they're not gonna come after me up here for a little bag of weed, but i'd still like to have this cleared up since i plan on returning to the states quite often to visit family and what not.
my question is, what's gonna happen to me in court? i'm 22, would i possibly spend any time in jail over this? would i just be deported back to canada? i assume i'd have to pay a fine?
obviously my biggest fear is jail time in michigan over this....i'm in grad school right now and any jail time would eliminate any chances of graduating this year.
any insight would be greatly apprecriated.
thank you all very much.
Also, to everyone who is from Michigan...
what do you think the chances of going to jail are for a first time offender with about 2 grams worth is?
No previous criminal record, no nothing. We both were clean as a baby's behind up to this point...
Also, if anybody has any information about what happens to Canadians in this situation, it would greatly be appreciated...would they actually put me in jail as opposed to giving me a fine and deporting me back to Canada?
The charges were, simple marijuana possession + a loitering possession.
Once again, any insight would be greatly appreciated...thank you all very much.
