Default Caught Shoplifting at Urban Outfitters

My question involves criminal law for the state of: MA

hi Im a minor, I'm 15 years old and I was caught shoplifting a 20$ hat in a urban outfitters in mass. I had to go with the manager to give him all my information. The cops weren't called or anything. They did call my "mom" but it was actuall my friend. I was banned from the store for 3 years and they gave me a notice saying something about getting a civil demand letter. So I was woundering what's gonna happen? Am I going to have to go to court or pay a fine if so how much? When will I get the letter in the mail and will I be able to pay for it without my parents finding out?

You will get a letter in the mail. As for your parents not finding out, I'd suggest talking to them NOW unless you are the person with the responsibility of getting the mail everyday. Better to find out from you now rather than later.

C.D's run anywhere from $100 and up. Best paid immediately. If you don't pay it, the store has 1 year to file criminal charges. They can also sue you and your parents for the Civil Demand PLUS legal costs (tripling the amount).

Good luck and I hope you have learned your lesson.

PS: I assume cops were not called? If so, you best come clean with your parents NOW because a court date will be mailed and you will need someway of getting there.

If no police were involved, there will be no court date.

    Yet.

Times to receive a civil demand letter vary, depending on how backed up the Loss Recovery Department is. You might get it in a week or so, you might get it in a couple months.

Retailers in MA can demand a maximum of $500, though you're unlikely to be hit with the max. Expect around $250 - $300. If you've got that kind of cash, you can pay it without your parents finding out, provided they don't get the mail first.

    Poor word choice.

You didn't confront anyone. You took responsibility for your actions by telling your parents.

I give you credit for that.

I also bet your parents appreciate you telling them, rather the chance of them accidentally finding out.

I hope you also told them you would take responsibility for any financial issues, such as the civil demand.
