My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: New York
I admit I made some mistakes when I was younger, but I have been working for the past 6 years trying to make it better. I pulled my credit report about 2 years ago and started making calls to creditors listed. Recently a lawyers office called and wants payment on a card that was closed in 2000, and last payment made in 2001. The last check I wrote to the credit card company I put PAID IN FULL on the memo line, as I thought that was the last payment and that it really was paid in full. They cashed it and I had not heard anything from them since. I did not realize I needed a paid in full letter, so I do not have one now. But it was also from over 8 years ago. Can the lawyers group put this as fraud and sue me? Can it even be collected on if I did owe?
