My question involves criminal law in the state of: Maryland.
I'm 17 years old and live in Maryland. About a month ago i was caught shoplifting at Claire's accessories (I was 16 at the time). I was stopped outside of the store and told I had to hand over all the merchandise I had, which I did. It was three items and totaled about $25. I was led to the back of the store where they wrote down my information (name, address, phone, ect.) They called my parents and told them they had to come get me. They also said they called the police who were on their way. The police officer and my parents showed up at about the same time. The police officer took down my information too. I was in such a state of shock I don't actually remember if I signed anything. But I think I did? The police officer said I would be receiving a court date in the mail in about a month.
I have yet to receive this letter.
What will happen in court? Do I need a lawyer? I have a completely clean record and am pretty much a goodie two shoes (aside from this little affair) and this was honestly my first time ever doing something like this. While waiting for my parents and police, the Claire's employee told me that pretty much the only thing that would happen is whatever punishment my mom gave me and nothing bad would happen to me. Is this true? Will I still have a clean record?
Also, I was offered a job at Target, where they run a backround check. Since I still have yet to go to court, will this show up on a backround check?
