    Default Minature stop signs

I was interested the the recent post regarding stop signs in shopping centers (or other private property). The U.S. post office that I frequent has a little half-size stop sign at a point on the lot prior to departure onto the street...am I required to stop at that? I would think not but I live in California, so I'm in a quandry. Thanks!!

"Required" is such a strong word. :?

If you were in an accident after disregarding the stop sign, you would likely be deemed at fault. As the stop sign appears to be on federal property, it may be that state laws dictating its size and placement are preempted.

I think it's similar to a line painted on the pavement in a mall parking lot with the word "STOP" painted below it -- no actual STOP sign. Could you get a ticket for blowing through it? I doubt it. But you would certainly be held liable for an accident -- at least by the insurance companies.

    Default Trend

The trend in California for the last 20 years, or so, is to put stop signs all over the place. You almost never see "yield" signs because they think people are too stupid to exercise any subjective judgement.

My friend failed her drivers license test because you drove through a painted stop line. In drivers ed we were taught that the lines are more important than the sign.If the line is say three feet infront of the line, stop at the line, pull out, do a saftey stop and procede.

You can also fail a drivers test by not being able to parallel park or "back around a curve". That doesn't mean you can be ticketed for these, however. In WA, at least, a "required stop" must be indicated by a standard STOP sign, as prescribed in the MUTCD (RCW 47.36.110). Compliance with the STOP sign is required by RCW 46.61.190. There are no laws referencing compliance with words painted on the street, especially on private property.

    Exclamation Re: Minature stop signs

The parallel parking requirement was discontinued many years ago in California because so few people in this state have the expertise necessary to perform the task. It's sad but true....

If it were still a requirement, we would certainly have a lot less traffic congestion (and accidents!)

At least 50% of the time when I try to parallel park, some moron will pull up behind me, either because they aren't paying attention or because they seemingly think that they should be able to nose into the space (I'm part-way past it, right, so how could I possibly be parking there)....

So unfortunately, in today's world, parallel parking seems more apt to increase congestion.

True...but much of the congestion seems to be compounded by some inept driver making 3 or 4 attempts before either succeeding..or giving up. The worst offenders are, without a doubt, new arrivals and old people. If people are incapable of parallel parking, I think it's fair to say they shouldn't be driving a car because a certain amount of skill is necessary in order to do so properly. Driving is no longer a privilege...sadly, it's become a right.
