I'll try to make this short. I'm 30+y/o and want to change both my first and last names.
For starters is this possible in NC and if it's not for a marriage?
My reasons for doing this are 2 fold:
1: Tired of having to spell my name all the time, it's often misspelled and mispronounced. Also I'm about to embark on my career in the medical field and I'd like to do that w/ my new name already in place to avoid the changing process and having to deal w/ licensing boards etc.
2: The main drive behind my desire for this change is the humiliation that is tied w/ my family and this name. when I start my own family I want to do so w/ a clean slate and not have to explain to my future children where Grandpa is or about the years of abuse I grew up surrounded by. I'd like to start my own lineage w/ my own family devoid of a dark family background looming over my future kids heads.
FYI: Im not doing this to avoid any legal issues or hide from any litigation or anything of that matter.
My plan is to get the change done and my future girlfriend/wife and children will never be the wiser. I'm basically wanting to erase that portion of my life as if it never existed, at least to my future family. I understand the moral dilemas that arise for doing this and I've been hashing this out in my head now for the better part of a decade. And now I'm ready.
What type of Atty would I need to find for this?
I've been told some states are more lax than others when it comes to this, would I be better off relocating to do this?
Any help would be great and I appreciate your assistance in advance!
DAN
