Emancipation Rights in New York

I have a question i know a friend that will be 17 in least than a month. But her mother doesn't let her do anything that a teenager her age should do. My friend is very unhappy at home because she is always stuck babysitting her little sister while the mother is at work or other places. My friend is worried if she leaves home now that her mother might call the police and get someone whop has nothing to do with what is going on in trouble can you tell me what to do? :cry:

Your friend can explore the possibility of emancipation. At 17, there is a possibility that if she moved into a safe and appropriate residence outside of her home, that the legal authorities would decline to force her to move back home; but I can't speak for local policy.

How about you keep your nose out of it since you have no idea why this kid can't do "normal" teenage things.

I have a 15 going on 16 year old daughter and she too can "never" do any of the "normal" things like go hang on the street corner - and mostly its because 1. -I don't let my kids go hang on the street corner - and 2. if I did -she's always grounded because she can't keep her pretty lit butt in school long enough and decides to skip three times in 10 days.

So, here's a novel idea- you have NO IDEA how hard it is out there- why don't you mind your own business and stop pushing this kid ot into the real world unless you're 100% sure that she's being abused in her home and not just taken care of
