Default standing mute vs. not guilty

Hi...i was just reading some info on posts and now am rather confused about the difference between standing mute and pleading not guilty. if you do either of these, can u still get a court appointed lawyer? which is the better to do? does one have advantages over the other?

If you are uncomfortable pleading "not guilty", if you stand mute the court will enter a not guilty plea on your behalf. Practically speaking, there is no difference.
