Default Costs and Risks Associated with Elderly Immigrant

Hi, I know someone who recently brought his elderly Grandmother from China about a month ago. His belief was that there would be very little costs in terms of medical insurance and other issues because the government would pay for it. He plans on applying for a health care program which is available to residents of San Francisco even though he and the Grandmother do not live in San Francisco.

I barely know the guy, and figured it would be best for me to just stay out of the issue even though I think he is giving immigrants a bad name, but now it is clear that the Grandmother is very isolated and becoming depressed. In China she had a fairly active social life, but here she knows no one besides her grandson and is scared to go outside on her own because she is concerned she won't be able to find her way back.

Is there anything I can do to convince him that there are great economic and legal risks associated with his actions and that he is better off sending her home and paying for someone to take care of her there?

    Thank you very much.

If she's not being properly cared for, you can contact Adult Protective Services.

Is there a reason to believe that this person will have any interest in listening to a word you say?

Thanks for the reply Mr. Knowitall. Although she is not happy, there is no reason to believe she is being neglected or not properly cared for physically. He won't listen to me just because I say something, but he might listen to the facts if he can confirm them. Although it is pretty likely the facts will confirm that there is limited financial risk to him.

Sorry for being overly personal, and not really asking a question in my original post.

one question is: if you co-sign for someone entering this country and then that person has to have an expensive emergency medical procedure will the costs go directly to you?

If there are other obvious financial risks that might help in his decision let me know.

Also as the main problem right now is difficulty adjusting to this country are there recommended aid groups to contact?

    Thank you in advance,
    -Seber
