My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: California
My husband and myself were fighting in front of our apt. Later we were both asleep in bed when the police rang our bell. When he went downstairs they cuffed him and then they came up and knocked on my door.
I was intoxicated but they claimed I attacked them, then pinned me down in front of the apt. door for a long time. They searched my apt. and got my license from my wallet.
I was repeatedly asking what crime I had committed and asking for legal counsel.
They did not charge me with any crime, but called an ambulance claiming I was a danger to myself. When I was brought to the hospital I was wheeled into a room where I sat tied to a bed for 20 minutes. Then someone came in, said "you don't need to be here", made me sign a release form, and I was released.
Now the hospital is sending me bills for 1675.00. I have written them stating I don't believe I am responsible for it: I neither asked for nor received ANY treatment there. They only replied that if I think the police are responsible for the bill, I need to take it up with them.
Can the police cause bills such as these in lieu of acual charges being filed?
What can the hospital do to me if I refuse to pay?
