Default Landlord is Increasing Room Rent for Me Only

    Hi, I live in California,
I rent a room in a house and have 3 other roomates renting other rooms in the same house.

I've been renting since 7 months ago and last week my landlord told me that my rent will be increased by $50.00 next month.. the thing is that my other 3 roomates are not getting this rent increase, only me because she wants to rid of me.. (her words). She has personal issues with me and told me that she will do anything in her power to rid of me.. so she's giving me a hard time and telling me things like " remove your car from my drive way and go park out on the street".. Or she won't let me do my laundry or cook any more... I have NEVER been late with my rent and never drink or smoke or even have sleep overs .. ever!! So this is all personal and I have no clue to why

She has only given me a verbal notice rent increase for $50 which I don't intend to pay as I don't think is fair that only MY RENT will be increase and not the other roomates.

None of us (me or my other roomates) have any type of lease agreement between us and the landlord.
I do however noticed that my landlord has a green pool, and lots of building violations that I have pointed out to her to fix in my room and bathroom but have not done still.

Can someone advice me on what to do (other than be run off by the landlord) and is the landlord or I in any wrong doing here? If so, who and what? How should I handle this?

    Thanks,
    Pearl

You seem to have separate verbal, month to month agreements.

If she has given you 30 days notice prior to increasing the rent, she is within her rights to do so. She is not required to increase everyone else's rent.

Your choices are pay the increase, give 30 days notice that you're leaving and move, or refuse to pay the increase and be evicted.

For a general discussion of rent increases in California, go here and scroll down to "Rent Increases". Notice must be thirty to sixty days, depending upon the size of the increase. Also, some cities have rent control ordinances that may further restrict the rent increase.
