A probation violation is exactly that - a probation violation. The underlying charge may be a misdemeanor or a felony. Most crimes involving controlled substances are felonies.
If you choose, you could help him find a lawyer. I doubt his probation officer will have any interest in talking to you.
You can get court documents from the court where proceedings occurred - they'll charge a copying fee, and may require a stamped, self-addressed envelope along with prepayment for copies.
